Entry forms available at both branches of the Albany Library. Stories must be turned into a branch of the library no later than April 11. Ask about this competition for next year.
K - 8 ART CONTEST USING CRAY-PAS. Deadline: December 9, 2011. The Sakura of America company, which makes cray-pas (a kind of crayon - pastel blend) runs a big art contest for K through grade 8 students. All the information can be found at www.sakuraofamerica.com. Click on the colorful contest box and go through the guidelines carefully. Tell your teacher because teachers are encouraged to be involved.
ART ON WHEELS: Student (all grades) art (virtually all media) and poetry (30 lines or less) contest sponored by the Linn County Art Guild. Deadline: May 31, 2011. The 2010 cycle is over but it is likely there will be a new cycle starting shortly. Take time to go through this site very carefully. The contest is an important one and at least one past winner has come from Albany, Oregon. May there be lots more!

The guidelines for the 2012 student poetry contest have been posted on the website maintained by the Oregon Poetry Association. Visit www.oregonpoets.org . The deadline is February 1 2012. Take a look at the rules as soon as possible because they are detailed require involving a teacher (or parent for the home schooled).

Look for a new contest toward the end of 2011. The contest is called the Louise Louis / Emily Bourne Student Poetry Award. The entry fee is $5 but a teacher can gather a number of entires for a group fee of $20. The website has a lot of material on it - look for awards and then individual awards and then scroll down looking for this contest. The actual guidelines are in a separate section so it has to be pieced together.

NORTHWEST YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS: There was a competition earlier this year for short (ten minute or less) plays written by those 18 and younger sponsored by Northwest Young Playwrights (www.nwyoungplaywrights.com). (See also www.northwestplaywrights.org) The deadline has passed for 2011 - it was in April but there will probably be another contest in early 2012. Get ready for it now. A ten minute play usually is ten pages. There are lots of websites with suggestions about how to write short plays and also with instructions about format (that's important).
